Chapter Fifteen

Information bounced non-stop in her head, to the point where Seren felt a headache brewing. Her movements had been almost robotic as she’d packed up their stuff from the house, not that there was that much, before they drove to Alliance headquarters and settled in one of the tiny cell-like rooms primarily for emergencies. At least the bed was big enough for two people. Nick hadn’t said if they were sharing the room, and she’d understand if they weren’t. This was his workplace, after all.

Her questions were answered when Nick came in behind her and dropped his bag beside hers, gave her a quick kiss on the crook of her neck, and disappeared to take care of the rest of their things.

So it seemed that they were to share the room after all. Seren should’ve been happy about it, but struggled to find a suitable reaction. It only reminded her that this would end and she’d go back to her old life while Nick remained here, at the Alliance Agency.

So why was her heart squeezing into such a painful knot when she imagined herself leaving? During this nightmare, she’d found Nick and had a glimpse of what she’d always wanted. Him. It wasn’t that young girl’s fantasy anymore, but one of a woman who saw a real man, one with exceptional qualities despite fighting the dark scars of his past.

Seren was brought back from her thoughts by the increasing sound of conversations coming from the common area, reminding her of the pressing matter at hand.

It was interesting to observe Nick interacting with his new family, the one Shane had provided for him. The men and women of Alliance were so different in attitude and looks, although they were an attractive bunch. And the most handsome of all turned at that exact moment to look at her.

Nick had always been intense, but when he shot her a glance it made her melt.

“We’re going to do an update in the conference room. You ready?”

As they went to the conference room, Nick only removed his hand from the small of her back to get her a coffee and lead her to her seat.

While the team settled around the huge table, Seren took a sip of her coffee, and when Nick did the same his leg came to rest against hers. While her heart skipped, it was his steady stare above his cup that had the most significant impact.

Shane came to sit at the head of the table, and voices died down.

“Okay, we’re here for an update. As we’ve had different teams gathering different intel, I think we should get on the same page. Wolf and Cain, you’re up first.”

Wolf pushed back his cowboy hat and signaled for Cain to get started. “We went to meet with your contact in Atlanta, Seren, the one who gave you access to the photos of the murders. It wasn’t easy, but I have to admit that Seren’s reputation helped in thawing him out. We went through the files, didn’t find anything new.
